WHO IS PAIN IN NARUTO?
Pain was a complex character from Naruto, and different aspects of him didn't make sense.
Pain aka Nagato belongs to the Uzumaki clan and is one of the main villains in Naruto. Nagato has a lot of aliases in Naruto Shippuden, one of them being Pain as it is more of a concept than a person.
Pain was the head of the Akatsuki, a criminal organisation that sought the power of the tailed beasts. He is responsible for a lot of things, including the murder of his own and Naruto’s mentor, Jiraiya, the destruction of the leaf village and murdering members of the leaf village in exchange for information of Naruto’s whereabouts.
SIX PATHS OF PAIN
Nagato created the Six Paths of Pain after he was left crippled during a battle with Hanzō. Unable to move or act on his own, he controlled six corpses to carry out his will as part of his "Pain" identity.
Each of the Six Paths of Pain can be used to perform any technique that Nagato himself is capable of, however, he limits each body to one branch of the Six Paths Techniques, the exception being Yahiko's body (the Deva Path) through which he performs a number of miscellaneous jutsu; the King of Hell and the creatures summoned by the Animal Path are part of his shared vision. Nagato refers to each body by the Path it embodies and has them serve specific purposes, be it offensive or defensive, reconnaissance or repair. Each of the Paths has its own importance in a fight – the Naraka Path's ability to restore all the other Paths making it the most valuable – and therefore, Nagato will sacrifice other Paths to protect those further up the hierarchy.
LIFE OF PAIN
Uzamaki Nagato was the child of Uzamaki Ise, who was a doctor, and his wife Fuso. The family lived on the outskirts of Amegakure and his parents provided humanitarian aid to the refugees of the Second Great Shinobi world war. It was whilst his family were staying in a deserted house that two Konoha ninja entered the house looking for food. Nagato’s parents were detected and they attacked the Leaf ninja who killed them in self defense thinking that they were enemy shinobi. Nagato witnessed this and it was at this moment that his Rinnegan awakened and in his rage he killed the two Leaf ninja. After burying his parents Nagato wandered Amegakure until he encountered Konan and Yahiko.
Initially Jiraiya only taught them how to survive but it was when they were attacked by a shinobi from Iwagakure that Nagato then killed with his Rinnegan that Jiraiya taught them Ninjutsu. Three years passed and it was then that Jiraiya deemed them capable enough to survive on their own before returning to Konohagakure.
After three years, Jiraiya left them and returned to the leaf village, entrusting their own future to themselves. To ensure a just, warless world, the three set out and quickly became popular and founded a team called the Akatsuki with Yahiko as its leader. Nobody could oppose them and if they did, they would ‘wind up dead. However, this fame spread to the leader of the Village Hidden in the Rain, Hanzo. He took Konan hostage and told Nagato that he would spare her if he killed Yahiko.

TOP 6 QUOTES OF PAIN
1. “Sometimes, you must hurt in order to know…”
Sometimes, you must hurt to know, fall to grow, and lose in order to gain. Life’s greatest lessons are learned through the pain.
2. “Embrace the fear.”
This is a continuation of Pain’s declaration that hardship is necessary for growth in life, and that fear holds us back from embracing our true selves.
3. “Love breeds sacrifice, which in turn, breeds hatred. Then you can know pain.”
This particular quote highlights Nagato’s view of love between two people, which, according to him, is a doomed premise, to begin with. There will always be an essence of inequality in a bond (where one loves more than the other), and the sacrifice of one will almost always be taken for granted by the other person.
4. “If you don’t share someone’s pain, you can never understand them.”
Here, Nagato talks about active empathy, wherein it is impossible to understand someone, be it a friend or an opponent unless they do not share their pain in some form. He followed this up by stating that even when you arrive at a shared perspective of pain and suffering, this does not necessarily mean that the two will be in agreement.
5. “All the pain forced me to grow up.”
This is a heartbreaking declaration, pointing toward Nagato’s difficult upbringing and his journey to embracing the ‘Pain’ moniker. He utters this when Jiraiya asks him how he became the person he is today, to which he simply responded with “Nothing happened. Nothing except the war.”
6. “This hatred binds us together.”
Nagato’s worldview has always been nihilistic, which is understandable, as he never witnessed love blossoming around him in healthy ways. Even the purest bonds he forged were tainted by the ravages of war and the shadow sides of human nature, alienating him from experiencing love in any form that led to healing and a sense of community.
